Urban Furniture - Bus Stop Shelter This project was developed in 1998 for the Research and Development Department of the JCDecaux company, a producer of urban furniture and outdoor communication . The working team was made up of Prof. João Bezerra de Menezes, assisted by Cláudia Mourthé - Professor in Ergonomics, and by the students Bruno Sérgio Oliveira, Sérgio Boiteux, Rodrigo Silva and Suzana Ichigo. EsdiLab was responsible for the development of a shelter which, in addition to its regular requirements, i.e. to protect public transportation users, should also work as urban furniture for information display, by providing a surface area on which advertising material (either institutional or commercial) could be posted. Materials that are easy to be manufactured, maintained and preserved were sought from the very beginning. Other aspects, at the same time, could not be overlooked, such as climate constraints: rain, wind, sun and rust from salinity from the sea. Therefore, aluminum and stainless steel were prized amongst all possible materials that would make up the entire equipment. Having in mind the users' convenience, a reasonable area of protection against unpleasant weather conditions like intense heat and rain was chosen , thus using the language developed earlier for shelters by the architect João Filgueiras, also in Rio de Janeiro. Currently, the shelter
designed by EsdiLab is already in use in Brazil, in Salvador, State
of Bahia (picture above), as well as in Portugal, in the cities of Aveiro
and Lisbon. The model is also participating in a bid process in Sydney,
Australia.
