From its inception in the 1960s, ESDI's library has grown to become the most specialized design library in Latin America. The main focus of its holdings is, of course, design; but it also houses a significant number of titles in related areas like ergonomics, art history, artistic practice, photography, etc. It is currently integrated into the broader library system of the State University of Rio de Janeiro and can, therefore, provide access to materials on other less related fields, as well. Access to the library is open to the public, and virtually all books and periodicals can be consulted on an open-stack basis. Loans are restricted, however, to ESDI staff and students. The collections can also be accessed via the Brazilian National Collective Catalogue of Periodicals, and student theses are available through the Calco Library System. Donations of books and periodicals are always welcome. Any items already owned by the library or of limited interest will be redirected to other libraries within the university.
