Lecture by Alexandre Poppe
On August 14, product designer Alexandre Poppe, graduated from ESDI in 1999 and living in Italy since 2000, gave a talk at ESDI on his work in furniture design and industrialization at Knoll International, one of the most important companies in the segment in the whole world.

Martin Darbyshire and students

Lecture by Martin Darbyshire
On June 27, British designer Martin Darbyshire, president and CEO of "Tangerine", a design company with offices in London and Seoul, gave a talk at ESDI on his work. Darbyshire was a member of Moggridge Associates and worked in San Francisco at ID TWO (now IDEO) . His company works in different areas of product and strategic design. Among its most notable projects is the innovative Club World seat for British Airways' business class. Isabel Fróes at ESDI

Lecture by Isabel Fróes
"From Arne Jacobsen to Skype: Denmark and the new perspectives for design" was the title of the lecture given at ESDI, on June 25, by Isabel Fróes, of CIID (Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design) and of the Designskolen Kolding. Isabel talked about the work developed on these Danish institutions. The lecturer's work is focused on the interaction between people and technology, and has done online projects, interactive instalations for museums in different countries. She has also taught the courses "Interactivity in the museum" and "The culture of play" at Kolding and the University of Copenhagen. Carlos Minc at ESDI

ESDI's Opening Address with Carlos Minc
Rio de Janeiro's State Secretary for the Environment, Carlos Minc, has given, on April 14, ESDI's Opening Address for 2008. Minc has been for many years – as a parliamentarian, in the executive branch, or in social movements – an active militant for sustainability and environmental responsibility, themes that are today a fundamental issue in the agenda of designers. In his lecture, Minc presented the environmental programs promoted by the Secretary he leads.

Mônica Correia

"Digital design: advances and perspectives"
On March 14, Mônica Correia, head of the 3D Design course at the University of Iowa, in the United States, gave a lecture where she showed the work done in that course and discussed the transition of traditional forms of drawing and presentation to digital techniques, including virtual reality.

New administration at ESDI
On March 3, ESDI's new director, Rodolfo Capeto, was sworn in by UERJ's president, Ricardo Vieiralves de Castro. ESDI's new vice-director, André Monat, will be sworn in on April 4.

Kun-Pyo Lee and Gabriel Patrocínio

Agreement between ESDI and KAIST and Korean symposium
A collaboration agreement was signed between ESDI and KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), one of the most distinguished educational and research institutions of Asia. The agreement, which allows the exchange of undergrad and graduate students and also faculty, was signed on December 14th, 2007, in Daejeon, South Korea, by the director of ESDI, Gabriel Patrocínio, and the head of KAIST's Department of Design, Professor Kun-Pyo Lee (photo above).

In Korea, director Patrocínio took part in the symposium "Design Issues in Emerging Markets", held on December 13th, 2007 at KAIST, when students, researchers and faculty from the Institute got together with representatives from major Korean industries. Among the lecturers, who discussed design and industry trends in the context of "BRIC" countries, were, besides the director of ESDI, representatives from Chinese and Indian design studios, and professors Cai Jun, head of the Department of Industrial Design of Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, and Ravi Poovaiah, head of the Industrial Design Centre of the Indian Institute of Technology, of Mumbai, India. BusinessWeek

ESDI among the best for "BusinessWeek"
The American magazine "BusinessWeek" published, in its October 15 issue, a special report on design education. Together with courses from the US, Europe and Asia, ESDI was the only school from Latin America among the 60 design programs selected by the magazine as the best in the world. The different sections of the feature can be accessed from the initial page of the report on the magazine's website.

Meetings with European visitors
On September 24, Patrick Raynaud (above left), director of ENSAD (École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs), from Paris, visited ESDI. He was accompanied by Bertrand Rigot-Muller, who's in charge of the cultural information sector of the French consulate in Rio de Janeiro. On September 25 ESDI received Josyane Franc (above right), director of international relations of the École Supérieure d'Art et Design de Saint Étienne (with which ESDI has an exchange agreement) and one of the organizers of that city's design biennial, and Marc Partouche, scientific director of Saint Étienne's "Cité du Design".

Together with them, ESDI received Eero Miettienen (below left), design director at Nokia, Finland, and teacher at the University of Art and Design Helsinki, with which ESDI has an exchange agreement, and William Yau, from the UK, who will head the design studio the company is establishing in Rio de Janeiro. The group met at ESDI in order to discuss public policies for design with Dulce Ângela Procópio (below right), the State of Rio de Janeiro's Undersecretary for Development, and designers from the state.

Fernanda Viégas

Lecture "Information visualization" by Fernanda Viégas
On September 11, Fernanda Viégas (photo), researcher at IBM's Visual Communication Lab, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, gave at ESDI the lecture ;Information visualization: the designer and a universe of data", dealing with the problems designers tackle when dealing with large amounts of data, that can, through visual presentation, reveal as yet unknown messages. Lecture "Culture and design" by Kun-Pyo Lee
On September 10, Korean designer Kun-Pyo Lee (photo), head of the Product Design department at KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), gave at ESDI the lecture "Culture and design", discussing the new paradigms for design in a globalized culture, and presenting some of the research tools developed at KAIST's Human Centered Interaction Design Lab, directed by him. Nicolas Register

Presentation on Marc Newson's work
Nicolas Register (photo), manager of Marc Newson Ltd, visited ESDI on September 5. Founded by the Australian designer Marc Newson, the company works mainly in product development and interior design. Register showed projects done by Newson, commenting their development from concept phase to commercial release, and talked about the different areas of design in which the company works.
