Order of Cultural Merit for Alexandre Wollner
On November 25, the designer Alexandre Wollner was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit, in a ceremony at the Oi Casagrande Theater, in Rio de Janeiro. The award, Brazil's highest in the cultural area, is bestowed each year on persons and institutions of notable achievement and renown in the different fields of culture. The ceremony, which was attended by president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the minister of culture, Juca Ferreira, and other officials, was followed by a honour dinner (in the photo above, Wollner and his wife Laïs Moura Wollner).

Alexandre Wollner was born in 1928 and, after studies at the Institute of Contemporary Art of his hometown São Paulo, studied design at the HfG-Ulm (Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm), where he also worked with Otl Aicher at the Entwicklungsgruppe 5. Back in Brazil, he established FormInform, the first design office in the country. In 1962, he was one of the founders of ESDI.
