Microsoft Research Design Expo 2004
people to people, from close friends to strangers

Rio de Janeiro's ESDI's participation in MSRDesign Expo 2004 comprises a total of 15 students organized in groups of three. They are all undergraduate and belong to the third, forth or fifth years of studies. Their participation is free and voluntary, as the project is not part of regular classes, and they have been working since last January, in a special schedule that spanned the school's summer vacations.

This page presents the teams and a short abstract of the projects being developed. In the future it will also show a full presentation of each project.

For Microsoft's "Connecting people to people, from close friends to strangers" proposal, we decided to base our project on the development of a new form of sharing and exchanging experiences while traveling. We aim to design a device that will capture and create mixed media messages that can be easily exchanged between people, so that backpackers, holidaymakers and others can share their experiences in a more complete way.

At present, recording and sending any kind of message beyond email currently presents too many practical barriers, particularly to a traveler. We therefore aim to design a device that will capture traveling experiences using mixed media, which can then be sent immediately to a friend, or posted on a website, amongst other possibilities. Pictures, video-clips, sounds and narratives: all will be transformed into a single, unique message at the push of a button.

Since eventually we move to work, live, or study in other places, we are always making new friends and ending up losing contact with old ones. Imagine being able to keep these contacts forever, without needing to put an effort into it. Someone you studied with when you were still in school, that next door neighbor who was always giving you a hand, your first boss who taught you many important things…. Imagine not wondering "Where in the world are they?" anymore, but actually knowing! What they are up to, where they are living, what they are working with, what are their favorite hobbies now, and so on… And now imagine how nice it would be if suddenly while doing some shopping, you unexpectedly ran into that old friend you haven't talked for years. That's what witwi allows you to do. It registers by itself people who you have contact with throughout your life, allowing you to have access to updated information of your friends. witwi - creating lifetime bonds.

Considering the main theme, people-to-people communication, we are especially interested in the issue of shyness. Sometimes it's hard to start a conversation with someone you've never met. Technology, as being a strong part of our lives, might help communication also in face to face situations. Wouldn't it be easier if you already knew things you have in common with others? youMe is an ice breaker device. It gives you information about others, as well as it makes yours available. youMe shows you that people want to meet each other. And then, it's up to you!

Virtual communication software available today lets you talk to anyone in the world. But talking is not always enough to make you feel together with someone else. We believe that feeling connected is much more than just having a conversation, it is enjoying an experience together. And this sensation virtual communication still cannot reproduce.

In our project we are designing a virtual movie theater, a new concept of communication software. In this movie theater, everybody watches the same film, but each one at his/her own home. And you don't need to keep talking incessantly to feel together with your friends. As you all have a common focus of attention - the movie - you feel safe to watch it unafraid of those embarrassing silences...

By its universal aspect, music was chosen as the language that would establish the communication between people. The messages transmitted through the melodies and rhythms can be understood by all, from different cultures and countries, transposing the barrier of language.

Communication would happen in an intuitive way, through the rhythms captured from tactile interactions. Iztmo captures and transmits those rhythms, in real time, for the participants, promoting an exchange of sonic influences.

Our main inspiration is the Microsoft Research Expo assignment, which believes that cultural diversity can help the development of projects, promoting people with different backgrounds to work together, creating potencialized results.
