Design, Technology and Society

The Post-Graduate Program of the School of Industrial Design has as its area of concentration Design, Technology and Society, based on a fundamental principle: the inseparability of Design from the technological dimensions and their impact on society; as well as a recognition of the field's interconnections with various spheres of knowledge, which translates into continuous dialogues with a wide variety of disciplines and practices that reveal the intricate cultural, social, economic, political and environmental relationships that run through the making of design.

The investigations - structured through different theoretical, historical, methodological and technological approaches - are organized into four lines of research, which seek to combine key objects pertinent to fields of knowledge intersected with design, such as visuality, arts and material culture; territorialities and the anthropocene; strategic design, management and innovation; the political implications of the field and its role in social transformation - interconnecting multiple areas, such as anthropology, architecture, arts, computer sciences, social sciences, information design, education, engineering, philosophy and urbanism.

The intention is to align research projects with contemporary debates and contemplate the complexity imbricated in the practices of Design as a transdisciplinary field - in terms of its modes of production, socialization and subjectivation, both material and immaterial. The program thus aims to train researchers and teachers in line with the mission of Brazilian public universities to strengthen science as an instrument for human development, in line with the UN's Social Development Goals.
